Inverdoorn Day Safari - 10 Hours

Includes: Return transfers from Cape Town or City Hotel/B&B ; All toll & entrance fees; Breakfast; Lunch; Game Drive in open top vehicle; Big 5 viewing; San Rock Art

Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Iziba Safari Lodge is located in the Ceres Karoo, just two and a half hours from Cape Town. Stretching across 10 000 hectares, Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah.

Succulent plant life characterises the floral diversity of the Karoo. Antelope such as kudu, eland, impala, springbok and gemsbok all roam in the reserve. You will be captivated by the distinct markings of the zebra and the graceful gait of the giraffe, while the brute power of the buffalo and the majestic beauty of the Cape Barbary lion will astound you.

Perched atop a safari vehicle or standing in a lookout point within the heart of the reserve you will be lost in the awesome vastness which surrounds you, as well as the solitude of the Karoo. Rangers add a rich element of humour and storytelling to the safari with anecdotes of the animals, wildlife facts and, most importantly, the threats facing many species today. At the safari lodge guest have the opportunity to unwind, and may even see the cheetahs going on daily walks with their handlers. These beautiful, big catsare the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild. In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5.

Since its inception, the reserve has re-introduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. After being eradicated for approximately 150 years the elephants once again roam freely in the reserve. With a healthy buffalo herd visitors are bound to see these volatile creatures on safari. The Cape leopard has long been an inhabitant of the vast mountain ranges, but its solitary and nocturnal habits make it an elusive creature. Searching for the Big 5 is the highlight of many safaris, and at Inverdoorn you can have this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

SANBONA FACTS

Fauna - From 2002, indigenous antelope species & black rhino were reintroduced, restoring the ecological balance and providing natural prey for the existing, leopard, brown hyena, jackal and caracal traditionally persecuted by decades of stock farming. In 2003 the conditions were suitable for the release of lion and cheetah, a return to the Klein Karoo for the first time in 300 years. Sanbona is in the process of signing a Stewardship Agreement with Cape Nature, the provincial conservation authority.

This agreement implies that Sanbona will be managed under strict conservation ethics, ensuring Provincial Nature Reserve status with an annually audited Reserve Management Plan. Flora- Sanbona comprises 3 major biomes, Succulent Karoo, Thicket & Fynbos. The Fynbos found on Sanbona is known as Renosterveld, one of the most threatened vegetation communities in the Cape Floral Kingdom. Less than 1% of Renosterveld is formally protected. The Quartz Fields of the Succulent Karoo are a very special habitat characterised by beds of angular quartz debris. They are home to a flora of minute succulent shrubs, mostly members of the Mesembryanthemaceae (Mesembs or Stone Plants). Most of the component species are local or regional endemics. The genus Gibbaeum, has diversified extensively on the Little Karoo quartz patches.

Unique Rock Formations-Sanbona Wildlife Reserve has examples of the unique Cape Fold Mountain rock formations formed some 350 million years ago. Continental collisions, the submergence of the earth's crust and the cataclysmic influence of the oceans have all contributed to the magnificent landscape. The geology consists of sedimentary formations of the Devonian era, the beginning of life on earth and trace fossils of various marine invertebrates have been found.

San Art- The Rock art at Sanbona is a legacy of the now extinct /Xam, Bushmen and pastoral Khoe-Khoen herders. There are 7 recorded sites on Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, with paintings dating back to more than 3500 years. Wilderness Area- This area covers 8 000ha within the 54 000ha that is Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.

This is only the second private wilderness area in South Africa. It is situated in the mountainous western area of the reserve where no infrastructure exists. This area is managed with strict wilderness protocols.Riverine Rabbit- In 2004, a surprise discovery of the critically endangered riverine rabbit (Bunolagus monticularis) near Touwsriver was the first recorded sighting of the species south of the Great Escarpment - and in the Fynbos biome. During July of 2006, this species was discovered on Sanbona.
